The Author

Janaka Bowman Lewis, Ph.D. is a professor of African American literature at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Her research is in African American women's narratives of freedom and representations of black children in literature.  She is the author of articles and book chapters on black women and freedom and play and sports culture in African American literature and creator of the Brown Schoolhouse series of educational books that reflect African American culture.
